Stuart is a designer and maker of architectural glass and stained glass windows. He produces work both for galleries and commissioned projects which have recently included the Bristol Haematology and Oncology centre and Salisbury Children's Hospital amongst others.
He has made work for this show using mouth blown 'antique' glass and craft processes which have changed little in hundreds of years, including glass painting: Each piece of glass is waxed up against the light on a glass easel and washed with a dark layer of vitreous paint. Once dry, the paint is worked with stiff brushes, sticks and needles to reveal the glow of colour beneath. After firing the painted pieces in a kiln, the glass can be leaded up to form the final window. His collection also includes smaller pieces made by screen printing and firing vitreous enamels onto glass.
