Born in Surrey in 1968, Joanne is a self-taught artist who has been creating original work, in many mediums, since her mid-teens. Art had been a self-financing hobby, which fitted in with her work in vintage fashion and retail until she moved with her fiancee to Dartmouth in Devon in 2009.
Jo’s love of living by, and being on the water has been the inspiration for her ‘mosaic’ seahorses (a creature she believes also brings her good luck). Each piece is unique, created with love, from a mixture of seaglass, shells and pieces of pottery, all found on the beaches around Dartmouth, in fact much is found whilst she is kayaking around Warfleet Creek where the Dartmouth Pottery used to be. Other creatures and symbols are now also in her work. She incorporates jewels, diamantes, swarowski crystals and charms into her work to give them a little bit of sparkle.
Her work extends to handcrafted greeting cards which are now sold through several galleries nationwide. In 2012 Jo had her first feature exhibition with Baxters and it gave her the chance to explore a different scale of work as well as other themes. Since then she has devoted her time exclusively to making, her style has evolved and her cards are in huge demand. It is unusual to be able to show large pieces now so we are excited to have this opportunity.
