Clare studied at Bristol School of Art and graduated in 2005 after spending nearly 20 years in teaching. She has been a full time artist since 2009 and is one of Baxter’s most popular printmakers.
She has a keenly developed passion for print and designs and handprints all her limited edition prints and images from a studio in Bristol. She has completed a variety of experimental screen printing courses to feed her knowledge and focuses on creating tone within a screen print. She manipulates the printed paper through laser cutting and blind embossing.
Using screen printing techniques, Clare builds layer upon layer of colour to build a subtle but powerful image on the paper in a long, labour intensive process involving patience and technique. The images originate from an emotion inspired by a piece of writing or as an immediate response to the natural world.
Clare’s limited edition prints are the result of her life and printing experiences, they capture a simplicity and beauty that buyers find accessible and calming.
Clare’s woodcuts came about because they are used as a basis for her large tree prints as she uses them to emboss the paper before printing. By winding the woodcuts through a huge rollered press they get pushed into wet paper and therefore imprint themselves onto the paper. Showing her process at a recent exhibition the wood trees themselves were so popular that she has started selling them in their own right.
